Mentor's Journey

BIRTHING FROM WITHIN® sources from many teachers, ancient myths, and traditions, including the Lakota. Lakota Elders of old gifted their teachings to all the peoples of the earth. From their contemplation of the archetypal energies of humans, animals, and the Earth, the Medicine Wheel emerged to offer a way of seeing and guiding our life in a way that is in tune with the Earth and seasons.

We see every BIRTHING FROM WITHIN Mentor on her personal journey of self-discovery and of giving back to the community. We wanted to mark each Mentor’s progress in our program in a meaningful way; we chose the animals from each of the Four Directions of the Lakota Medicine Wheel.

In our online Mentor listings (under “Classes”), you can see how far a Mentor has progressed in our program by the animal symbol(s) beneath her name.

Mouse

Mouse
Enrolling in the Mentor Program is represented by the Mouse, which represents Beginner’s Mind and reminds the Mentor to awaken the inquisitive child-like trust and sensing qualities within herself.

Bear

Bear
Upon completing her first level of study and attending the Advanced Workshop, the Mentor is marked by the Bear. Her development requires her to “hibernate” in solitude, to turn her attention inward, and to listen deeply.

Eagle

Eagle
After finishing her second level of study and becoming Certified, the Mentor is marked by the Eagle. The Eagle acknowledges her ability to hunt within and to see the “big picture.”

Buffalo

Buffalo
When a Certified Mentor is called to offer herself in service to the herd, by becoming an Advisor or Facilitator, she is marked with the Buffalo.
