Healing Birth Trauma

    BIRTH as a

HERO'S

JOURNEY

 with
Pam England

From the first birth stories we hear as children, from messages given in prenatal appointments and classes, to traumatic birth stories told by perfect strangers in the grocery story…  we have been entrained to view or experience birth and postpartum as a Victims Journey.

But there is another way.

Pam England, midwife and author of BIRTHING FROM WITHIN®,  is giving an inspiring talk to all parents and birth professionals on Birth As a Hero's Journey. Learn the important distinction between birth as medical event, a rite of passage and the hero's journey. Pam England will explain how we were conditioned to experience birth in one way or the other, and what we can do now to prepare or birth as hero's journey.

Pam England, Inspiring, dynamic and uplifting, this talk will inspire and move you to action. Through poignant birth stories, expressive birth art, and innovative processes, Pam England, who has been teaching and initiating countless women for over two decades, is shifting the birth paradigm and showing you how to see birth in a new light. If you, or anyone you know, has experienced emotional birth trauma, spend the day with Pam England and find new meaning in your (and every) birth story.

DISCOVER NEW MEANING in EVERY BIRTH STORY

This uplifting workshop, led by Pam England, is for everyone who cares about birth and is seeking new meaning and inner-resolution after a difficult labor, birth or postpartum transition.

If you are a birth-related professional or therapist who wants to know what to say to parents after a difficult birth, or if you are aware that your own unresolved birth trauma (either from giving birth or witnessing a difficult birth) is interfering with your ability to be present, trusting or relaxed in your work, this will be a life-changing workshop, both personally and professionally.

If you have experienced birth shock, birth trauma, or have not been able to resolve negative feelings after a difficult birth, in just one day, you will discover the hidden jewel in that birth story and take away a whole new way of looking at yourself and birth: birth really is a hero's journey.

If you or someone you work with are seeking peace of mind and renewed confidence, one of the tasks of prenatal preparation will include healing a bitter birth story and gathering new ideas that will help prepare emotionally for another birth. This special day is designed to support you in this important work.

This is what you will learn:

  • What and Who Awakens the Birth Victim, Judge, or Love-Warrior-within
  • Tell Me What Happened
  • Out of the LabOrinth
  • Birth Story Circle

A common thread in "birth trauma" is the feeling of powerlessness. Circumstances in labor or life are not solely responsible for awakening certain archetypal energies in parents and birth professionals. We will explore how early conditioning, birth stories, childbirth education, language, and unresolved fear or shame shape our expectations, assumptions, images, and how all of these influences feed various archetypal energies within us. This kind of knowledge and awareness is Power.

Pam England coined the word "LabOrinth" when she realized the ancient symbol is a perfect symbol for the unknown twists and turns of labor. One way or another, every mother makes it to the Center, where the child is born, but then she must find her way out of the LabOrinth postpartum. However, some mothers get "stuck in their LabOrinth," going round and round trying to make sense of what happened in labor. In this workshop, parents and professionals will learn to make a LabOrinth, and give new meaning to every story using this ancient symbol.

Birth Stories are powerful; every Telling causes a lasting ripple effect within the Teller, the Listener, and throughout society. So, a Birth Story, whether joyful or painful, should not be told casually or to strangers. In this workshop, participants will be initiated in the lost art of StoryTelling and StoryListening. When the Story is held sacred, and heard deeply, we may experience the healing we are seeking.

Experience one (of many) powerfully transformational and ceremonial processes in a BirthStory Circle led by Pam England. Participants will be guided to share and release parts of their birth story in new ways; and to learn to listen deeply to others' birth stories.
