The Archetypes of Birth

Welcome.

Hello and welcome, we're so glad you have chosen Birthing from Within to support your continued growth and learning!

Archetypes offer us a powerful lens for understanding the many ways people respond to pregnancy, birth, and the transition into parenthood. They help us look beneath behaviors and words to notice the needs, beliefs, fears, strengths, and protective patterns that may be shaping someone’s experience.

In this course, we’ll explore the archetypes that often emerge along the journey of birth, from the Child archetypes, Orphan, Gatherer, Victim and Judge, to Hunter/Huntress and Love Warrior. We’ll also explore the archetypes we encounter within ourselves as birth workers, including the Caretaker/Savior.

Rather than using archetypes to label or categorize people, we’ll use them to deepen our listening, cultivate curiosity, and expand our capacity to meet each person where they are.

Through experiential practices, stories, and reflection, you’ll explore how archetypes show up in the families you serve, and in your own work as a mentor.

The invitation throughout this course is simple:

Notice. Become curious. Listen deeply. And make room for what is possible.

There are supplemental documents and videos for each lesson. You can move through each lesson on your own time throughout the week, but be sure to leave plenty of time for practice. The more often you engage in the process, the more dynamic your mentoring will be!

Accessing recordings of live sessions:

We know that practitioners join us from all over the world and understand the nature of birth work and an on-call lifestyle. Each live session will be recorded and the recording will be emailed to you within 48 hours.

Please keep an eye on your email for subject line “RECORDING: Archetypes of Birth Session X” from contact@birthingfromwithin.com.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will:

  1. Understand what an archetype is - and what it is not.

  2. Explore the difference between child and adult archetypal energy.

  3. Understand why archetypes are particularly useful during the childbearing year.

  4. Begin recognizing archetypal language in themselves and in parents.

Self-Motivated and Experiential Learning:

  1. Experience and embody the birth art process by making a series of birth art drawings. Take your time. Try to spend 15-20 minutes on each drawing. When you think you are finished drawing, don't stop drawing; keep going (read "Keep Going" in Lesson One).

  2. After your drawing is finished, jot down answer at least three journaling prompts.

  3. Once you have completed your drawings and journaling, choose one or two to share in the Birth Art Community Group.

  4. Participate in the weekly, one-hour long, Live Teaching-Consultation Calls beginning in Week 2.

Learning Objectives:

Be able to:

  1. Explain the BfW birth art process: what it is and why it is potentially transformative.

  2. Set up a space conducive for making birth art including gathering art materials for drawing assignments in the birth art process.

  3. Describe two principles for choosing a particular birth art assignment for an individual or class.

  4. Demonstrate how to give a birth art assignment clearly.

  5. Develop an understanding for how to effectively offer a visualization for a Birth Art prompt.

  6. Demonstrate how to coax the artists during the art-making process to “keep going” and state three keep going prompts.

  7. State the reasons for transition-journaling and state three journaling prompts.

Self-Motivated and Experiential Learning:

  1. Make an appointment with at least one volunteer (who is interested in introspection and personal growth, not doing a favor).

  2. Practice explaining the birth art process and motivating your volunteer to want to make birth art.

  3. Lead your volunteer through the process, including utilizing a teaching moment.

  4. Submit write-up summarizing your session and self-evaluation on the Birth Art Community Group.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the qualities, needs, gifts, and shadows of the Victim and Judge archetypes, including the Good Patient archetype.

  2. Recognize patterns of powerlessness, self-judgment, blame, perfectionism, and compliance that may emerge during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

  3. Explore the difference between control and agency and identify opportunities to support a parent’s sense of choice and participation.

  4. Practice responding to Victim, Judge, and Good Patient energy in ways that validate experience while supporting greater agency, discernment, and self-trust.

Self-Motivated and Experiential Learning:

  1. Read the modules:

    -  Van Gogh's Shoes

    -  The Lively Solution-Focused Dialogue

  2. Lead your second birth art session, a one-hour private birth art session with a volunteer (friend, pregnant or postpartum parent or birth-related professional). Follow the guidelines from Week Three above.

  3. After your session, using self-evaluation prompts, reflect on: what worked, and what didn't seem to; list teaching moments you identified; and what parents learned. Post a summary of your session and what you learned this week on the Birth Art Community Group, and ask questions if you have any.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the qualities, needs, gifts, and shadows of the Hunter/Huntress and Caretaker/Savior archetypes.

  2. Recognize patterns of determination, protection, action, rescuing, fixing, and over-responsibility in parents and birth workers.

  3. Explore how their own archetypal patterns may influence the way they respond to parents, particularly when they feel a strong desire to help or protect.

  4. Practice accompanying parents with compassion and presence while maintaining healthy boundaries and trusting the parent’s capacity and journey.

Self-Motivated and Experiential Learning:

  1. Experience and embody the power of clay birth art.

  2. Lead a volunteer through one birth art session using clay

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the qualities, gifts, and challenges of the Love Warrior archetype and its role in integrating seemingly opposing qualities such as courage and surrender, advocacy and humility, and strength and compassion.

  2. Recognize how multiple archetypes may be present simultaneously and shift throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the transition into parenthood.

  3. Use the archetypal lens to move beyond labeling and toward greater curiosity, compassion, flexibility, and choice.

  4. Integrate the archetypal framework into their mentoring practice by noticing, wondering, validating, and expanding possibilities for the parents they serve.

Self-Motivated and Experiential Learning:

  1. Experience and embody the power of clay birth art.

  2. Lead a volunteer through one birth art session using clay
