Home Practice

    1. Finish creating your Smashbook journal, gilding the pages, adding a cover and smashing any remaining pages.

    2. Journal about the Child archetype (qualities, attributes, your relationship with) and create a collage image. You may wish to create more than one page on the Child to represent the various aspects of that archetype.

    3. Continue exploring your Heart's Question in relation to this new role. Journal and add an image using the art medium of your choice.

    4. Listen to the member call with Maeve Sundstrom on the Heart's Question.

    1. Deep Listening and Validation exercise-find another birth worker, or a friend to pair up and practice listening with all five ears about a topic that is activating for you. You can list several topics that are especially activating or challenging for you to hear about (related to pregnancy, birth, or postpartum) for them to choose from. Their role is to speak in favor of the topic you dislike for about 2 minutes, and your role is to try to be present, stay connected, and notice what's happening in your body and which ears you are listening with. After, have them share with you their impression of how they were received- did they feel judged, were they in rapport, did they feel connected, etc. After practicing just listening, you can do a second round with a different topic and practice both listening and offering a piece of validation. Be mindful not to move into fixing, changing, or educating in this practice.

    2. Create a note card of Solution Focused Questions- practice incorporating them into your life.

    3. Listen to the member call with Maeve Sundstrom call on the 5 words framework.

    1. Using journaling and collage, continue to explore the Judge and Victim archetypes reflecting on their qualities, attributes, and ways they show up in your life and in relationship to this role as a facilitator. You may want to create several pages for each archetype.

    1. Use the Story Map template to create a map of the Inanna story. You may want to create multiple pages in your art journal to explore symbols, gates, etc.

    2. Tell someone the Inanna story in a private or group setting sometime this month. This could be family, friends, clients, or parents you are working with.

    1. Create a Hunter/Huntress archetype collage in your art journal.

  • Offer at least one idea for how you might respond to the potential pitfalls we brainstormed on our call. Bring your ideas with you to the February 22nd call.

    Potential Pitfalls:

    1. What happens when they are not hungry- when they don't want or need it.

    2. Capitalism- here to make a buck.

    3. Binary thinking/right and wrong thinking (people should give birth w/o an epidural/natural birth is better).

    4. Challenging something we are doing or saying (ex: a person asking why are we practicing with ice because it is not evidence based).

    5. Holding the light and the shadow of the group- how to respond to people who don't believe in the "magic" of birth because they have been harmed, witnessed harm etc. How do we hold their truth AND that birth is our sacred birth right?

    6. Unlearning/uncondition-ing from prior modalities of learning (ex. people that want to be more clearly told how to do it "right", who may want class plans, syllabi, or more structure than BfW offers).

    7. Innocent archetype "trust birth" (validation vs agreement).

    8. Run on talkers, someone stealing the show (taking the reins).

    9. Getting hooked (getting caught up in disagreements/discussions over specific situations).

    10. Keeping people safe (harmful comments or actions).

    11. Not knowing what to say or how to respond to someone.

    12. Time management- what happens when we run out of time and did not cover all the things?

    13. What happens when no one shows up to the online class and it's being recorded?

  • 1.. Watch this video of a beginning mentee leading a BfW process.

    2. Write down 2-3 things you think they did well, a place where they shined or were brilliant. This could include specifics about how they presented the process itself, how they connected with the parents, or any other details.

    3. Write down 2-3 things that are areas they could continue to develop and grow, places to reflect on, or questions to offer them to go deeper. Be as specific as possible so as to provide true learning opportunities.

    4. If there are more than 2-3 things that you identify, offer what you think might be the most helpful pieces to focus on for their overall growth and understanding of the process. You could also add anything you may have done differently if you were leading.

    5. Please email your responses to christine@birthingfromwithin.com 24 hours before our next call.

    6. Additionally, please bring your ideas for responses to the potential pitfalls to our next call.

  • Watch this video of a beginning mentee leading a BfW process. The process is complete by 9:05 so you only need to watch up to that point.

Gather some painting supplies for our next call. Tempera or acrylic paint and a few big brushes is preferred, but whatever you have will do!

  • Watch this video to offer feedback on a mid-course recording of the Labyrinth process. The process starts at 6:55.

For this one, try offering specific examples and recommendations in your feedback (perhaps referencing steps or details on the process map or other BaHJ materials that might support their learning, and things they could say or do differently etc.)

If there is something that catches your attention, either because it is brilliant or on point or because it is off, make note of it, listing the time and maybe the direct quote to respond to, if appropriate, so they can go back and listen later.

Practice being honest in a way that offers them tangible feedback and learning opportunities, while also holding compassion. Write your response as if you are speaking directly to them.
