Storytelling in Birthing from Within
Storytelling in Birthing from Within
In Birthing from Within, we use storytelling in a similar way to how we use the labyrinth and other metaphors: as a way to access the underlying truths of the prenatal, birth, and postpartum experiences that aren’t dependent on specific personal medical details. Stories can provide us with maps for new or unfamiliar experiences, lighting the way as we go forward into the unknown.
In this course, we offer the story of Inanna’s descent into the underworld, deriving from ancient Sumer and one of the oldest known mythological narratives, as a metaphor for the journey of birth and postpartum. Telling the story of Inanna is a powerful addition to any birth class or prenatal session, but it can feel daunting to remember and recount such an epic tale.
Throughout your course, there are audio segments of the story for you to listen to, as well as a complete map for telling the story in Module Three. The map provides important background, notes on accuracy, scaffolding, touchstones for the story, ideas for variations/embellishments, processing after the story, and more. There is also a blank template for creating your own Inanna story map.
